personality
Ripley Marsh hadn't known she was looking for a daughter of War Admiral until she saw Headstrong walk off the trailer at Intrepid Racing Stable. Once again, her perfect timing saw her swipe both Indian Night and the powerful bay mare. The thing that struck Ripley was the mare's dominating presence. She wasn't a mean type, rather she was stoic. She carries her head proudly and always powers along on her toes. She's not aggressive, not a biter or a fighter, but she does have quite the stubborn streak. It took a lot of work on Malcolm's part to get her to pay attention to the minute humans that dared to control her. She's a pest in the barn and needs to be tied outside of her stall when it's being cleaned or she'll do her best to help by picking up the pitchforks and throwing them. She's quite the character to say the least.
While preparing in the paddock, Headstrong's hardest traits to deal with are emphasized. She drags her handlers around on the lead ropes, acting more like a colt with her chin tucked to her chest and kicking out with her back legs. If Headstrong is quiet, it actually worries her handlers because that is not like her. She definitely interests the bettors because if ever there was a powerhouse of a mare, it is her. On the track, Headstrong will prance and dance, working herself up into a glittering frenzy ,but not because of the crowd so much as she knows she is about to race. For all her overwhelming strength, Headstrong is quite well behaved in the gate and she possesses a dynamic ability to break ahead or with the pack. Her early speed is astonishing for such a large horse and gives her the appearance of being a woman among girls. When she settles out into her glorious rhythm, Headstrong gives her jockey overwhelming confidence. She coasts along on her own and if challenged, the mare will settle back into second or third, letting that new horse assume the lead without taking off or getting too competitive. On the far turn, Headstrong will bolt to the lead and pull away from the field, pouring on shocking speed even when going at a distance. If someone comes to her in the stretch, Headstrong is gutsy and lion-hearted, battling right down to the wire as if her very life depends upon it.
